Private Story
Nucleo
A mixture of elements drives the habitat's loss. South-east Honduras has been one of the main hubs for transporting illegal drugs since the early 2000s. The militarized approach to counter-drug policies has pushed traffickers further and further into more remote forest areas. They established an economic relationship between the exploitation of natural resources and the logistics of drug shipments, laundering vast sums of money into legal and illegal activities such as timber trafficking and livestock companies.
In 2020 a so-called "Narcocarretera" (Narco's road) passing through the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve was detected by Honduran security forces. The Honduran Government's refusal to take direct action is a clear demonstration of the country's levels of corruption and the impunity with which the drug traffickers operate.
This series aims to shed light on the psychological and emotional toll of witnessing a forest vanish. It also sheds light on the elusive methods deployed by criminal syndicates to fuel environmental destruction.
