In the heart of Gaza City, amidst the rubble of what was once a thriving neighbourhood, lies the makeshift home of Mohammed Khader, his wife Ebtesam, and their seven daughters. Their dwelling, a remnant of a house shattered during the Israeli War on the Gaza Strip, serves as a poignant symbol of the harsh realities faced by countless Palestinian families trapped in the cycle of siege and occupation.
With no access to electricity for up to sixteen hours a day, the Khader family relies heavily on the meagre aid provided by international and local organizations to survive. Like many others displaced by the War, they find themselves living amidst the ruins of their former lives, their once vibrant community reduced to a landscape of destruction.
Despite the hardships they face, Mohammed continues to care for his pigeons, forging a unique bond with these birds that symbolizes hope and companionship in a desolate landscape. Wherever Mohammed and his children roam, the pigeons faithfully follow, offering solace and a sense of continuity amidst the upheaval.
Through the lens of Khader's family, this project illuminates the multifaceted aftermath of the War in Gaza, shedding light on the daily struggles and resilience of women, children, and men grappling with the lingering trauma of conflict. It is a testament to the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity, showcasing the remarkable capacity of individuals to find strength and connection even in the darkest times.
