The Terry Collection is a world-renowned forensic anthropology collection housed at the Smithsonian Institute.  When I first encountered the collection as a student, I very much wanted to photograph its specimens in the same way I would approach traditional portraiture.  My extraordinarily kind teacher has allowed me to return periodically to do just that.
My focus with this project is the expression of the individual - his or her unique characteristics - with an eye to what persists after death; evidence of disease or trauma, imperfect dentition that would have created a charming smile in life, medical procedures, etc.
Rather than regarding human skeletal remains with horror or disgust, they are revered simultaneously as unique individuals whose bones tell their story and as objects worthy of depiction.
This gallery will be added to several times a year, as more images become available.
