Madison, WI
June 19th 2020
Juneteenth. An annual holiday, long celebrated in African-American communities across the country, gained major recognition in 2020 due to nationwide protests, riots and rallys resulting from the murder of George Floyd, and decades of abuse from police and society at large. Sprinkle in a pandemic to create renewed national attention for the Black Lives Matter movement. Many, predominately white people, were scarcely aware of this important holiday marking the day slaves in Galveston, TX were told they were free. A push has been made to make Juneteenth a national holiday.
There were events across the country to celebrate Juneteenth, and Madison, Wisconsin was no different. The photos that follow are showing the beginning of a march from Olin-Turville Park—where celebrations had been going on since noon Friday—to the Dane County Jail. A group of several hundred occupied north and south bound lanes of a usually busy John Nolen drive. During my time with the march a moment of silence was held while the names of those who have suffered from police brutality were read aloud.
