The strike started in the city of Cuzco on June 15th by a trade union faction, which was later joined by those from several regions, extending to the capital. The teachers demanded the increase of their salaries, the payment of the social debt, the repeal of the Law of the Public Teaching Career and the increase of the budget of the Education sector.
During the development of the strike the fragmentation of teachers unions was evident. A large number of professors did not recognize as their representatives those who negotiated with the authorities, so they continued with the strike indefinitely. Although a large section of teachers kept the strike, on August 24th the government formalized the benefits agreed upon in the negotiations with a supreme decree; warning the teachers that if they did not return to the classroom after August 28th, they would proceed to the hiring of new ones.In the following weeks, there were numerous teachers marches in the capital with violent confrontations with the police. On September 2nd, the leader of the United Trade Union of Education Workers of Peru - SUTEP Pedro Castillo, after the death of an Ancash teacher, announced the suspension of the strike. Ángel Retuerto Quintanilla died due to cerebral hemorrhage, presumably accelerated by the precarious conditions in which the teachers who had arrived in the capital lived, in addition to the constant confrontations with the police with tear gas bombs.
