Illegal buildings have been coming up with impunity on the riverbeds of Buriganga for many years. unauthorized structures including tin-shed houses, four-storey buildings, one-storey buildings, earthworks, privately owned houses with partial installation of mosques, government hospitals, industries, supermarkets etc are there in the Adi Channel (original channel) of Buriganga River in Hazaribagh and Kamrangirchar area. The constructions have also squeezed the width of the riverbeds significantly at many places. Recently The High Court has ordered the eviction of 74 illegal structures in the main channel of the Buriganga River in Hazaribagh and Kamrangirchar within the next three months. The High Court bench passed the order in response to a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB). A High Court bench comprising Justice Govinda Chandra Tagore and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order in response to a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) seeking necessary order. According to the CS/RS survey of the river, the deputy commissioner of Dhaka and chairman of BIWTA has been asked to implement the directive. Through this eviction order the encroachers will be punished who are turning our mighty rivers into pitiful streams. On 22 and 23 November, BIWTA has carried out an eviction drive in Babubazar to abolish illegal settlements. Though river grabbers are mostly influential people, the people living on rent on this unauthorized structure are ordinary people. Abolishing of those structures makes many of them homeless.
