November 2022 and our first full day with Sea Women Expeditions, onboard the MV Explorer with Waterproof cruises and expeditions and we were jumping into the Zodiac’s at sunset. Our main reason for being there? We were studying Orca behaviour around humans. In Norway, there are general whale watching guidelines as to how far ships and boats should stay from whales, but there is no legislation in place to prevent close contact with marine life and therefore no penalties if the guidelines are not followed.

Human behaviour around whales in the fjords can upset them at rest, while they are cruising as a pod or travelling at high speed. We went to Norway to film the orca to establish their behaviour around humans, whilst in their environment. There is little or no scientific data on how they interact with other species and so our aim has been to forward our research to support the introduction of legislation into ecotourism in Norway.
