Our memory works in an amazing way. It acts as a virtual theater. Most of my childhood memories appear as negative images, undeveloped, waiting to be processed. Some others lie projected in an intermediate place, halfway between the present and the past, between reality and imagination.
I remember my childhood and adolescence as a confusing scenario in which I felt permanently out of place. Books, comics, movies or video games were my passport out of a place where I didn't quite fit in. Thanks to them I was able to connect with unknown worlds. Wearing a helmet and wielding a book, I played to be a time traveler, proyecting myself into the future.
The items that accompany the intervened images you are about to watch are small treasures that have survived the passage of time and act as votive offerings through which I invoke the past and connect it with the present.
I was never really there proposes a mirroring game between my 3 years-old-self in 1984 and my work as a photographer in order to answer this question:
Who plays the leading role? That (child) who imagined the path or this (adult) who built it?

En realidad nunca estuve allí La memoria funciona de una forma sorprendente. Actúa como un teatro virtual. Muchos de mis recuerdos de infancia aparecen como imágenes en negativo, pendientes de revelar,esperando a ser procesadas. Otras se encuentran proyectadas en un lugar intermedio, a medio camino entre el presente y el pasado, entre lo real y lo virtual.
Recuerdo la infancia y adolescencia como un escenario confuso en el que me sentía permanentemente fuera de lugar. Libros, cómics, películas o videojuegos fueron mi pasaporte de salida de un lugar en el que no terminaba de encajar. Gracias a ellos pude conectar con mundos desconocidos. Armado con poco más que un casco y un libro jugaba a proyectarme en el espacio y el tiempo.
Los items que acompañan a las imágenes intervenidas son pequeños tesoros que han sobrevivido al paso del tiempo y actúan como exvotos a través de los que invocar el pasado y conectarlo con el presente.
En realidad yo nunca estuve allí plantea un juego de espejos entre mi yo de 1984 y mi trabajo como fotógrafo con el que trato de buscar solución a la pregunta:
¿Quién es el protagonista en esta obra de teatro? ¿Aquel (niño) que imaginó el camino o el (adulto) que lo hizo posible?
