Here is this year’s line-up full of talks, workshops and more. All are free of charge and open to all who are able to join. Take a look and register for anything that catches your interest! 


October 19th - Exhibition Opening and Awards Ceremony
4:00 PM | Makerere Art Gallery

We will be awarding and showing work by the winners of the 12th edition of the Uganda Press Photo Award, the 6th edition of the East African Photography Award and the 8th edition of the Young Photographer Award. Projects from this year's Emerging Photographer Mentorship Programme, including some of last year's Young Photographer Award winners, will also be on show.

Attendance is by invitation only.

October 21st - Exhibition Walkabout with UPPA Winners

Visit the exhibition and talk to the winners of the Uganda Press Photo Award 2023. You will get insights into their stories and how they relate to this year’s “Behind the Headlines” theme.

October 21st - “Ku-Nassa: Political Posters in Uganda” Photo Book Presentation
2:30 PM | Makerere Art Gallery
Professor Kristof Titeca (University of Antwerp, Belgium), presents his book on the politicak posters and Nasser Road. The book is a collage of the prints that he collected since he became interested in this peculiar history twenty years ago, about which he has written an extensive analysis. The publication also contains photographs that he and Ugandan photographers Badru Katumba and Zahara Abdul took of this place, and an essay by playwright and essayist Yusuf Serumkuma.

This will be followed by a conversation with contributor and photojournalist Badru Katumba and journalist Agather Atuhaire.


October 25th - Panel discussion: On Storytelling as a Building Block for Effective Journalism

Storytelling (visual, oral and written) is the way for us to understand the world and perspectives of others. Well-told stories have the power to create awareness, connection and understanding  of pivotal happenings and issues we are part of. A conversation on how to create impact and awareness with your work as a storyteller. 

Moderated by Josephine Karungi.

October 27 & 28 - Portfolio Review
9:30 AM - 5:30 PM | Online

All-day review sessions are open to all photographers from across the African continent. They will have a chance to talk to industry professionals and peers and seek exposure, feedback and advice about their work.

October 31st - Behind the Stories 

4:00 PM | Metaverse and Zoom 

A conversation with East African Photography Award winners. Join us as we delve into the making of their stories. The photographers will share some insights into their work and process.

November 2nd - Photography on the Hustle: Talking Your Book

6:00 PM | Afropocene StudioLab

Photographer and educator, Martin Kharumwa will talk about how to promote oneself as a photographer, acquire clients, write grant applications, apply for and win residencies and create a wholesome photographic practice. 


November 9th - Financial Literacy Seminar
6:00 PM | Bushpig

Entrepreneur and business consultant, Abid Were Businge will lead a financial literacy seminar. With many photojournalists in Uganda working as freelancers who don’t collect a regular paycheck, it’s important to have a discussion beyond just making money but also about saving and wealth management. Abid will break down ideas around financial literacy and wealth management to help photographers plan better for their futures.

November 11th - Mentorship Programme Outcomes Presentations (TBC)

In conversation with exhibiting 2023 mentorship programme mentees Isaac Muwanguzi, Lyndah Katusiime, and Kazoora Boaz.

Moderator: Monica Ahairwebyona, an alum of the programme.
