                                                                                                     THE HOLGA AND I

( the beauty of the unexpected )

Until a few months ago I used to shoot my images digitally. I always had to have a specific plan, the perfect idea, everything in absolute order before and while shooting. I used to think and re-think several times the concept I wanted to portray and even make sketches before shooting: “It has to look like this!”. It was the mastery of the mind over everything else. That was my creative process. Well... that’s ok. There is nothing bad about it. But one day I decided to do things differently. I needed a break from my sometimes-obsessive mind. So I took it. I bought an Holga. Everything changed. Shooting with a plastic toy film camera is such a different experience. I never know what exactly my images are going to look like, I just have an idea. It has been wonderful. Having an MFA in Photography I know how to technically create the "perfect photograph.". Yes, I do know. However, I consciously yet intuitively have decided that, for now, in this very moment of my life, I want the images to surprise me. I want the excitement of the unexpected. I want light itself to draw, paint and create magic inside my toy camera in ways I have never seen before. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I pursue the beauty of the accidental. If feels so correct.
