In the city of Cap-Haitien, Northern Region, infrastructure is crumbling following the 2010 earthquake. Clean water and seweage treatment is scarce for thousands of residents. The surrounding waters are filled with garbage, without collection facilities.

This is Julio. I met him at the Haitian Dominican border crossing.

Each day, one bus passes across the border and Julio attempts to sell small liquor bottles and other affects to make enough money to feed himself and his family.Â

Despite his circumstances, he is full of life and laughter.

Haiti is considered to be the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and potentially the world. Even before Hurricane Matthew, conditions were not livable... Having never fully recovered from the 2010 earthquake, residence live without infrustrature; lack of health facilities, sewage treatment, clean water, and frequent Cholera outbreaks.

Even before Matthew, survival was a daily struggle for thousands. One year ago I was on assignment there. The following is a glimpse in to these dyer conditions...
