Born in the United States after the abolition of slavery, the so-called "historically black" universities were for a long time the only possibility for African-Americans in the segregated South to get a higher education and to participate in the NCAA championships, the US college soccer league. Today, these institutions are still the benchmark for soccer. Every year, their teams compete in extremely popular games. Like the Florida Classic.
