Midwives are the backbone of maternal and child healthcare in many communities around the world. They provide essential care before, during, and after childbirth, ensuring that mothers and newborns receive the best possible care. The work of midwives is especially critical in areas where access to healthcare is limited, and maternal and infant mortality rates are high. In Hargeisa, Somaliland, midwives play a vital role in providing maternal and child health services at the Hargeisa Group Hospital. With the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), midwives like Rahma Haybe and Hamda Cawil have been trained to provide high-quality care to mothers and newborns. Thanks to their expertise and dedication, the hospital has been able to offer a range of services, including childbirth assistance, neonatal care, family planning, and support for survivors of gender-based violence.

The importance of midwives is further highlighted by the story of Amina Cabdi, a mother who has given birth to eight children, six of which were born at home. Amina's most recent birth at the MCH clinic did not go as smoothly as hoped, but thanks to the quick action of the medical staff at the Hargeisa hospital, her newborn received immediate support and necessary treatment. Amina's experience underscores the importance of access to quality healthcare for both mothers and newborns, especially in areas where home births are common.

In addition to providing critical care, midwives like Samsam and Hibou also offer emotional support to mothers and families. The work of midwives is not just about delivering babies; it's about building relationships and trust with the communities they serve. Samsam and Hibou's dedication to their work is a testament to the unwavering commitment of healthcare workers towards serving their community. Proper nutrition during pregnancy is crucial to ensure the health of both mother and baby, and midwives play an essential role in supporting this aspect of maternal care. This is why the HGH has implemented various programs and training sessions for its staff, including midwives and nurses, to better support the nutritional needs of pregnant women and new mothers. The importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy and the benefits of breastfeeding are highlighted by a sign at the HGH, an initiative supported by UNFPA.

The role of midwives in maternal and child health cannot be overstated. Their expertise, dedication, and compassion have a profound impact on the lives of mothers and newborns. The UNFPA's support of midwives at the Hargeisa hospital has helped to improve the quality of care and access to essential services for mothers and children in the region. It is important to celebrate and empower midwives around the world, recognizing the vital role they play in maternal and child health.
