The Mercè's massive boozings: images of the incidents in Barcelona
This weekend Barcelona has seen three consecutive nights of uncontrolled boozing in different parts of the city. For the festival of the "Mare de Déu de la Mercè", the patron saint of Barcelona, 15,000 people -according to the data of the City Council- gathered in the Espanya square without incident. The council wanted to ensure that although the illegal festivities could be foreseen, they could not be avoided, and in the evening, the knock-on effect worked: more than 40,000 people gathered in the Plaça d'Espanya on the night of the event.
The macrobotellón ended with serious incidents. On Saturday, the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) put up security in Plaça d'Espanya and the party moved to Bogatell beach, where the night was also marked by incidents, injuries, looting and clashes with the police.
