In December of 2012, I set out out to explore the Mississippi delta for a week. Being an Ohio native, I had never experienced the southern states. I didn't know much about the region and I had no solid plans in mind- I just wanted to drive backroads, explore the landscape and talk to people in small towns all across the delta. Escape from my otherwise fast paced and structured lifestyle. While working on photographic commissions across the midwest, I travel often but rarely have an excuse to pull over. These small trips are often about getting to somewhere, making photographs, and coming home. Rarely do I have a chance to wander aimlessly across parts of the country that I'm unfamiliar with for the sake of seeing what there is to offer. I found myself dropping pins onto a map, and then working my way to that location, often opting for the most difficult route. Miles and miles of empty cotton fields with a scattering of small churches pervaded my line of sight, and thus an interest for the southern way of life was born. I would like to spend 2-3 weeks in the area this coming year, working in the same way that I've approached this.
