Reveal: The 2022 Fellowship Exhibition
June 11, 2022- July 12, 2022
15 Canal Pace, Bronx, NY
BRONX, NY- En Foco and WallWorks NY presents Reveal, an exhibition featuring the work of En Foco’s 2022 Photography fellowship winners. The fellowship rewards artists of color who demonstrate a high quality of work according to a panel of judges, including En Foco’s curator Marisol Diaz-Gordon. Curated by Diaz-Gordon, the common theme of the exhibition is revelations.
I had the opportunity to connect with Diaz-Gordon to learn more about the show.
Bronx-born and raised Puerto Rican photographer and curator, Diaz-Gordon was the former Program Director of En Foco from 1998–2011. Currently, she is working on her MFA in Digital Media at Lehman College in The City University of New York (CUNY).
The show centers around the idea that every generation has faced the dilemma of the retrospect of its inner darkness. Diaz-Gordon questions how can the current generation act as a catalyst for positive change. This reflection further questions how society can also solve what she describes as "our intrinsic attraction for cruelty and its damaging consequences."
As guest curator of this exhibition, Diaz-Gordon aims to create a dialogue regarding sex, gender, race, class and age. In her curatorial statement, she states that it is inevitable to reflect on the layers of isms within sex, gender, race, class, age, etc. "...although my assessment of humanity seems bleak, there is a crucial group in our society that can garner change, and that is the artists." As a result, the selected work centers around issues in today's society like racism, ageism, and immigration that are not receiving enough attention. "By exposing their experiences of their surroundings with unwavering determination, a dialogue is generated that confronts the ugliest truth of our society while also creating the possibility of progress," she adds. "Pushing society’s boundaries and it's falseness to reveal what is there."
Guests can view the work of these artists at 15 Canal Place, Bronx, NY until July 12, 2022.
About the Curator
In 2008, she was nominated by En Foco for a commission with George Eastman Museum to document landscapes in Puerto Rico. That work traveled to such venues as the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, (2009) and is currently held in the permanent collection of George Eastman Museum. From 2016 to 2018, ARTViews Gallery at Montefiore Medical Center collected, commissioned, and exhibited her work. She is also a participant in the Bronx Artist Documentary Project (2014).
