During the Q&A event, IWMF Deputy Director Nadine Hoffman and Photojournalist Nicole Tung (Honorable Mention, 2017) discussed the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award, and its application process.
Created in 2014 with a $1 million gift from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Award will be given annually to a woman photojournalist whose work reflects courage and dedication, as Anja's does. The Award winner will be publicly honored, have her work showcased, and receive a cash prize of $20,000.
ABOUT Nadine Hoffman, Deputy Director, IWMF
Nadine Hoffman is the IWMF’s Deputy Director, and she can often be found wrangling journalists in under-reported places. After starting her career as a reporter in Boston, Nadine transitioned to non-profit work, focused on international human rights and education. She has been a part of the IWMF team since 2010. She is passionate about developing programs to support the IWMF’s global community of female journalists, traveling to far-flung places, and smashing the patriarchy. Originally from Pennsylvania, Nadine holds a Bachelor’s degree from Gettysburg College and a Master’s degree in journalism from Emerson College.
ABOUT Nicole Tung, Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award Honorable Mention, 2017
Nicole Tung was the recipient of an Honorable Mention for the 2017 Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award. An American-born photojournalist raised in Hong Kong, Nicole freelances for many international publications and NGOs, covering the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, and her work often explores those most affected by conflict. She has received multiple awards from International Photo Awards, PX3, and was named PDN's 30 Under 30 Emerging Photographers. Her images on Native American War Veterans were awarded by the Society of Professional Journalists for Best Online Reporting and the Images and Voices of Hope Award of Appreciation. Nicole served on the board of the Frontline Freelance Register.
