Watching pictures of this story is not recommended to all people, so if harrowing pictures don’t harm you, no problem will remain to watch them.

Mourning ritual for the loss of religious figures has been customary from past among Muslims and Shiites (one of the two main religions of Islam) around the world and of course among Iranian Shiites. It is customary to mourn every year for the loss of Prophet Muhammad and eleven Imams.

Every year Shiites around the world hold special mourning rituals on the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (grandson of Prophet Muhammad and the third Shia Imam) and his brother, Hazrat Abbas, who both were martyred by Yazid (Imam Hussein's contemporary govern claimants who Muslims call him accursed) and his followers.

The  rituals which are held for Imam Hussein is more stilted from other morning ritual because Shiites believed that imam Hussein martyred innocent; according the written documents and the narrated left by history Imam Hussein and his brother fought with few followers against thousands of enemy troops and finally were martyred. The day of Hazrat Abbas’s martyrdom is Tasua and the day of Imam Hussein’s martyrdom is Ashura.

Every year among Shia majority countries such as Iran mourning ritual begins from the begging of Muharram (the month in which Hazrat Abbas and Imam Hussein were martyred respectively ninth day, Tasua, and tenth day, Ashura,) and reaches its peak in Ashura.

Throughout cities in Iran, many homes and mosques cook whatever food called “Nazri” (votive) and distributed between people for free. People believe that eating Nazri has some religious reward inside and it may heal and cure pains and solve problems. So many livestock are sacrificed in Iran to be used for cooking Nazri.

During trips to various cities in Iran I found out in some cities rather than sacrifice cows and sheeps, camels are sacrificed for Nazri. The pictures you are going to watch are the story from sacrificing a camel to cooking its meat for Nazri.

Holding rituals is a common matter in all religions but the issue is to what extend such religious ritual are going to be held and don’t harm? Is it necessary to sacrifice a camel or other livestock for Nazri?

Some other kind of Nazri can be paid instead of sacrificing livestock; can fast, can help the poor and charities or at least can cook some other food for Nazri with no necessity to use meat, such as Shole Zard (a kind of dessert), Ash Reshte (a kind of noodle), etc. Or if there is insistence to sacrifice an animal, let do it at slaughterhouses and butcheries not in public.

Anyway there are always better ways to hold religion customs and of course Ashura customs. The pictures published in this story are just some samples of holding Ashura rituals in Kerman and Zahedan.
