DIFFERENT FACES OF HUNGARIAN REFUGEE CRISIS
(a story of Elio Germani/S4C Brussels)
While Orbán's Hungary spends 200 millions Euros to erect a 3.5 meters high razor-wire fence along the Serbian border (and is currently preparing to take action on the Romanian and Croatian borders as well), the burden of fulfilling the basic needs of refugees has been taken by spontaneous and organised initiatives of both Hungarian and international citizens, or local NGOs or groups such as Migration Aid, Menedék and Helsinki.
I could only describe the situation I have witnessed in the three Budapest stations as well as along the Austrian and Serbian borders as a human miracle.
The work carried out by hundreds of volunteers has been crucial in alleviating the suffering of several thousands of people transiting through Hungary and who were facing extreme conditions and hardships.
These portraits represent the two, interchangeable sides of a same coin: any of us can become a refugee, or decide to help to change the course of events.
