The 100cameras Snapshot Project in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is going well! If you live in or will be visiting Rio soon, let's connect! Supporting education and visual literacy with youth in Morro da Providência has been a wonderful experience so far. I have been documenting the group and how they have been doing in the first three lessons. Please check it out!
I have an amazing opportunity to teach photography and storytelling to youth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This collaboration between the non-profit 100cameras and CoFondation (French artist JR's non-profit) will directly benefit the youth at Casa Amarela (a community youth center) in Rio. Using the 100cameras curriculum, I will teach over a month at Morro da Providência, and act as a facilitator to foster creativity and learning. I already spent time in the neighborhood shooting photos during a workshop with David Alan Harvey in 2014. The kids in Providência love to learn, and photography is such an awesome bridge to personal growth and helping the community. The 100cameras model gives youth the chance to raise funds through their photography for the community they live in. It is a win-win project. But I won't be able to do this alone: I need your help!
Would you consider helping with this great cause and sharing the project with your friends? Thanks for any support that you can give! A share on Facebook, a repost on Instagram or Instagram Stories etc. Follow along on Instagram @scottmbennett and also go directly to the indiegogo page to donate funds toward the project and read more about the details. I am a volunteer and want to inspire youth through photography. I will be in Rio starting March 8 for about 5 weeks. If you are in town, feel free to contact me so you can visit the class!
I would like to announce my photo exhibit titled Fighting for the Hill (Lutando pelo Morro) about the Morro da Providência neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This project started as part of a workshop with Magnum photographer David Alan Harvey in 2014, and focuses on the community of the favela in Rio and the challenges that came about because of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, including the demolition of houses and the forced removal of residents. The photo project highlights the work at Casa Amarela (a community youth home donated by the French artist JR in 2009) and the dedication and work of local Brazilian photographer Maurício Hora in the community. A total of 16 12 X 18 Framed Digital Ink Prints will be on sale for $50 each. Any proceeds from the sale of prints will be donated to help Casa Amarela in Brazil, and I hope to do a similar exhibition in Rio de Janeiro and to lead a photography workshop with the youth at Casa Amarela early next year.
Join us at Coffee & Tea Collective in North Park, San Diego, for some wonderful coffee selections (the BLVD Nights and BLVD Market on El Cajon Blvd. will be happening just a few blocks away as well!). I hope that you can make it to the Fighting for the Hill Photo Exhibit and Reception!
