Portrait series done to foreigners living in Mexico City. Everything starts by a simple question: What is that you brought with you when you left home for Mexico City? Based on their answers I conceptualized the pictures to show all these “Objects of Nostalgia”, small symbols of their origin present in clothes, manners, decore, diet, etc.The idea behind these portraits is to show the objects and circumstances that still ties everyone to the country one was born. No matter for how long you abandoned it, you always bring something with you from the place that saw you grow. This ongoing series pictures different nationalities that live in Mexico now a days. In all The person, looking upfront to the camera interacts with the symbols of their country.
All portraits are done in the subjects home or in a symbolic place for them. Being foreigner in a new country is never easy, whether you established in it 1 year o 35 years ago, you have to leave many things behind, you miss a lot and you start building upon new materials a whole new self. I asked every participant: What is that you brought with you when you left your country? What is the thing you miss the most? Do you still have something tying you to your country? Would you move back home? I try to unveil my subjects old self.
Furthermore the search goes to the identity, what makes you feel from one nationality or another. The cultural clashes you find and how your particular origin creates a distinct way of looking and living life. It doesn’t matter the origin, the reason they left their country or for how long they have, they are always habits, rutines, pleasures or people that hold a little part of yourself in your place of origin, these are the objects of nostalgia I’m working to find and represent in my portraits. This little conections inhabit in the borders between present and past, public and private, foreign and local.
