Hay acontecimientos que es mejor no celebrar. Se cumplen 10 años de la catástrofe medioambiental producida por el hundimiento del Prestige, un naufragio más de los muchos que dan nombre a la costa Da Morte.Aquel 19 de noviembre de 2002, cuando las olas partieron en dos el viejo petrolero y el fuel comenzó a extenderse sin entender de fronteras, empezó la mayor catástrofe medioambiental de este país.
Las cifras hablan por sí solas: 77.000 toneladas de petróleo de las que más de 60.000 tiñeron las aguas de las costas portuguesa, española, francesa y británica; pérdidas de 24 millones de euros al mes por el cese de la actividad pesquera en Galicia a causa de la marea negra según el ministro de Agricultura en aquella época, Miguel Arias Cañete; 23.000 aves petroleadas en los primeros 6 meses recogidas en las costas de España, Portugal y Francia, etc.
La marea negra tuvo su contraréplica en la llamada marea blanca. Nunca antes se habían movilizado miles de ciudadanos por una causa común: la recuperación de las costas afectadas por el vertido de fuel del Prestige, organizados bajo la plataforma ciudadana Nunca Mais.
Capítulo aparte merecen las decisiones políticas del gobierno de José María Aznar restando peso a la catástrofe del Prestige, pero parte de ese peso en forma de fuel cubrió el plumaje de miles de aves que vieron afectado su ecosistema y en la mayoría de los casos su supervivencia.Con el proceso judicial en marcha se reabrirán viejas heridas y se cerrarán otras, pero los miles de afectados no olvidarán el desprestigio y el daño causado por el hundimiento del Prestige.
