Pieter Wisse (1980, The Netherlands) represents an example of a 21st century player active in the visual field; both on and offline. Apart from being a photographer he also works as an editor, a curator and lecturer. He studied documentary photography at the School of Fine Arts in Utrecht. Since his graduation in 2007 he has ventured into a large array of photography related fields. He self-published two photography books including ‘I Believe in 88’, a documentary body of work showing a group of rightwing extremists in former Eastern Germany. Between 2009 and 2012 he was the owner and founder of Four Eyes Photography & Art, a gallery and bookstore in Rotterdam that also released a magazine with the same title.
Pieter has a very clear and distinct vision of what great photography should be. He is best known for what started as a research project. He is the founder and sole creator of the internationally acclaimed website 500photographers.com. On this website he introduces photographers that contain the features he believes to be of the utmost importance to be successful as a photographer in this day and age.
Due to his endeavors on the internet he is now also curating exhibitions and creating projections for photography festivals and other institutions. Since March 2017 he is the artistic leader and head curator of the 2018 Rotterdam Photo Festival.
