Jian Gao is an award-winning photographer currently based in Beijing and New York. Pulitzer Center on Crisis reporting grantee (2016). Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar (2013). His work awarded as the first place by PDN, Communication Arts. Lucie Foundation scholarship shortlisted in professional category. Eddie Adams Workshop XXVI alumni. World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass nominated in 2014.
Jian's work has been published on many platforms, such as NatGeo, Doc!, Invisiable Photographer Asia, Rangefinder, American Photography 30, The Eye of Photogarphy, IPA, NYPH, etc. His work has been exhibited and collected worldwide.
From 2013-2017, he worked as Digital Editor at Magnum Photos, Photo Assignment Editor at The New York Post and Photo Editor at Daily Mai/Mail Online in New York.
He was mentored by VII Photo Agency photographer Ed Kashi. After the "completion" of his college project, he was offered an internship at Magnum Photos. Started from 2013, he is not only work as a photographer but also a photo editor at agency, newsroom. He was interviewed by Shutterbug Magazine (2016) on his professional practices together with Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Deanne Fitzmaurice and several VII Photo Agency photographers, such as Ron Haviv, Ed kashi, etc.
In the beginning of 2017, Jian has decided leave the offices and continue to work as a freelance photographer.
