ViewFind offering 4 $5k grants for stories about race

Saturday, October 31, 2015 | News

Questions of race, ethnicity, and cultural identity have existed since the beginning of humankind. But recent events in the United States and around the world -- from a spate of police violence and hate crimes in America to attacks against religious and ethnic groups around the world -- have raised questions about just how far we have come in recent decades.

To help explore these issues, ViewFind is awarding $5000 each to 4 photojournalists to produce stories that dive into the human narratives behind the discussions. One of these grants will be reserved for a student photojournalist.

We welcome applicants from around the world. The deciding factors will be the ability to tell compelling visual stories, a strong proposal for a story on the theme of race and ethnicity, and a demonstrated ability to tell visual stories for a mass audience.

Judges:

Eli Reed, Magnum photographer

Mike Davis, Renowned picture editor, Alexia Tsairis Chair for Documentary Photography, Syracuse University and ViewFind advisor

Yukiko Yamagata, Associate Director, Open Society Foundations Documentary Photography Project

Kenny Irby, Senior Faculty, Visual Journalism and Diversity, The Poynter Institute

Extended Submission Deadline: November 30, 2015
