October 15th - Winners Announcement

October 16th -  Canon Check & Clean

Register for the complimentary check and clean.  The registration will only be open on October 16th between 10am – 4pm EAT.
We're introducing some safety measures due to the current situation so after registering, a representative from Anisuma will contact you to book the check and clean appointment within 48- 71 hours after the registration closes.
    - All equipment must be dropped off and picked up from Anisuma by the registrant at the address listed below.
    - Social distancing will be observed when inside Anisuma.
    - Location: Anisuma Traders Ltd, Plot 47, Jinja Road, Next to Shell Petrol Station, Kampala, Uganda
    - This check and clean is only valid for registrants living in Uganda.

October 17th - Hands on Your Canon
9:00AM - 11:00AM

Open to Canon camera users, this training is a chance to speak to Canon specialist Sumy Sadurni about how to optimise the usage of your equipment.

October 20th- Photographer’s Talk with Barbara Minishi

Join us for a talk with Kenyan Photographer & Creative Director Barbara Minishi, who will take us through her creative journey and will share how her work, way of being and seeing the world has evolved.

October 22nd- Canon Storytelling Seminar with Georgina Goodwin

Theoretical storytelling workshop which will provide photographers with clear steps to create concise, ethically aware and beautifully crafted visual stories thought by documentary photographer and UPPA judge, Georgina Goodwin.

October 24th - Portfolio Review

An all-day review open to all photographers from across the African continent. They will have a chance to talk to industry professionals and peers and seek exposure, feedback and advice about their work. More details here.

October 26th - The History of Photography in Uganda (and its Many, and Complicated, Archives), lecture by dr Richard Vokes

In the framework of our ongoing “Photography and Visual Literacy for Active Citizenship” programme, Dr Richard Vokes will discuss the history of photography in Uganda as well as tell us more about his work with various photographic archives. His research focuses primarily on the African Great Lakes region, especially on the societies of South-western Uganda, where he has been conducting ethnographic fieldwork since 2000. He has published extensively, including on: development (governance, education, and natural resource management), the history of photography, media and social change and visual anthropology.

October 26th - 30th - Get Out There, Communication Seminars

The Uganda Press Photo Award is proud to present a series of communications seminars for early-and-mid-career photographers and photojournalists in partnership with This series of talks centres around the creation and management of a professional online presence, and how that can enable photographers to manage their work, connect with media professionals worldwide and market themselves in this very competitive international industry. We’ll discuss the available platforms and what the implications of sharing images on them entails, as well as how photographers can benefit from and capitalize on their online presence without jeopardizing the value of their work. Speakers include Lauren Steel from Visual Thinking Collective, Adriana Teresa Letorney and Rachel Abady from Visura, Sumy Sadurni, Amy Daniels, Of Soul and Joy Photo Project and Jin Ding, International Women’s Media Foundation

“The Creative Journey: Process Practice & Pivots”’ an exploration on building sustainable career growth, navigating change and nurturing holistic wellness. The talk will be moderated by Kenyan Photographer & Creative Director Barbara Minishi and speakers will be Patience Asaba, a filmmaker and producer, documentary photographer Martha Tadesse and leadership and wellness coach Cece Ojany-Bekhor.

November 5th - TALK TALK TALK: Mobile Phone Photography
4:00 PM

TALK TALK TALK is a series of presentations and discussions in collaboration with African Photographic Society and CAP Prize, around photography in African contexts with the aim of networking the different initiatives on the continent and beyond and developing ideas for collaboration.

We will talk about Mobile Phone photography with CAP Prize 2020 winner Ismail Zaidy & East African Photography Award shortlisted photographer Eyoeal Kefyalew.

November 10th- Instagram Live with Rodney Quarcoo
3:00- 4:00PM

Documentary photographer and photo educator based in Ghana, Rodney Quarcoo will talk to us about his work, he will discuss the Miraisha Programme and his experience with teaching young photographers across the continent and he will share a few tips about Canon equipment he uses.

November 11th - Documenting Democracy: Preparing for Uganda's upcoming elections

In conversation with Abubaker Lubowa and Alex Ashaba. We’ll discuss how they’re preparing for the upcoming elections in the newsrooms and as individuals.

November 12th- Photographer’s Talk with R. Canon Griffin
4:00 PM

Artist R. Canon Griffin will talk to us about his ways of seeing and looking at photographic archives. He will also introduce History In Progress Uganda, an initiative which he has been part of since 2011 alongside Andrea Stultiens. More importantly though, he will take us on his personal creative journey, discussing the reasons that prevent archives from actively existing, and examining the possibilities that archival photographs offer as entry points into past stories. He will also discuss the relationships between truth, importance and clarity in approaching photographic archives. Through these conversations he will talk about how he uses archival imagery in his own work, as well as the ways in which past, present and future are locked in a dialogue that offers opportunities for exploration.
