In 1930s FDR's Works Progress Administration was an ambitious employment and infrastructure program created by President Roosevelt in 1935, during the bleakest years of the Great Depression.
They built hundreds of handball courts in schoolyards, parks and beaches throughout New York City. Handball is still played in all five boroughs, but in Coney Island is the core of one-wall handball
