Private Story
Eyes Open
I taught photography and cut-out animation to kids in the South Bronx and began to explore the use of photography as a pedagogical tool…I began with how to make pinhole cameras out of shoeboxes. We would go out into the neighborhood to take photographs, then bring the pictures back to the classroom, where the students would tell me the stories around the photographs they’d taken and I would write them down. They would learn to read their own stories. It was a very intuitive method for stimulating basic read, while developing ideas of visual literacy. - S.M.
