Shuran Huang (she/her) is a photographer based in Washington, D.C. As an international resident originally from China, she often confronts the reality of assimilating and adapting to new communities. As the daughter of a translator mother and an epidemiologist father, her background helps her understand the meaning of commitment and develop her dedication to bringing communities together and help others through visual storytelling. Shuran’s work focuses on immigration, culture, human rights, and interactions in between through moments of intimacy.

Her work has been featured on National Geographic, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, The New Yorker, Bloomberg, San Francisco Chronicle, Netflix, Visura, Phoenix New Media (凤凰网), etc.

Shuran earned her master’s degree in photography from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She studied and graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international journalism.

Shuran was selected as one of the 24 mentees around the globe for the
2021 Women Photograph Mentorship Class. Her portrait of the former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was listed as one of the most-viewed content on National Public Radio in 2020. She received a Grand Prize for 2018 Photo District News’ Faces Portrait Photography Contest, was selected as a winner for 2019 Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward Competition and was shortlisted for 2019 Siena International Photo Awards. She was also the alumna of 2019 New York Portfolio Review and 2019 Dow Jones News Fund Digital Media Program.
