The severity of the damage has make many organizations and professionals ask for immediate moratoriums in constructions permits, so they are not allowed constructions in the maritime zones and prevent more problems that already affects 60% of the over 1,000 beaches on the island. In Arecibo alone, approximately 111 feet of coast has been lost.
There are even speculations of plans to make an artificial reef in the touristic area of Condado area were many hotels are located.
And along with the erosion, many houses that has been close to the coast had been abandoned either because of relocation of its residents or simply by the dangers in the structures.
