Uganda diaspora
In the global society that we live in, finding an identity is a challenge for many of us who grew up in different places and different cultures- to the point that perhaps we missed connecting with our own culture, and our roots.
This on going project is a journey of self discovery, and seeks answers on the importance (or non importance!) of identity through documenting the lives of women in Uganda who grew up abroad in countries like Canada, US, Switzerland and UK and have come back to Kampala to reconnect with their roots.
Through this project, all of us women involved including myself, are exploring questions about identity and using our conversations as a sort of therapy. What is home? What makes you where you’re from? What is nationality? Are you from somewhere because of your blood? Your looks? What is beauty? What is African beauty? What is African fashion? The recurrent pattern is there: “We didn’t quite fit in abroad, but we also didn’t fit into traditional Ugandan society”. This is an ongoing exploration of society, but also exploring a new type of culture that we see more and more: our own personal culture.
This project came about very organically to me, as I myself, as a Mexican/Spanish/ Chilean photographer that grew up in many different places, have always felt identity to be the biggest challenge in both loving and understanding myself.
