Nicky Quamina-Woo is a New York City based, Black + Native Hawaiian investigative photographer and visual storyteller, who divides her time between the African continent, Southeast Asia and New York City.
Woo has traveled to more than 30 countries, largely focusing on documenting social injustice and unrest with projects that center on the complicated realities that frame those events, particularly as precipitated by the legacy of western colonization. She is deeply interested in the aftermath of collective trauma and the myriad ways it can shift the underlying ethos of groups to form something new; Adaptation as a means of survival. Nicky’s desire to examine these changes is intrinsically linked to her ethnic heritage, whose parallels inspire her to dig deeper in search of human fortitude and solace.
Nicky is a winner of American Photography 37, Portrait of Humanity, the Nikon-Stafford FotoReportage grant, as well as a Reuters Storytelling grant for her work on a Tanzania-based project about the intersection of western medicine and witchcraft. She is a proud member of WomenPhotograph, DiversifyPhoto, Black Women Photograph and Authority Collective all of which work to share voices of the underrepresented.
In her time as an independent her clients include The New York Times, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, CNN, Human Rights Watch, Facebook, NPR, Apple, The Melinda French-Gates Foundation, Google, Reporters Beyond Borders, Vogue Italia, and Marie Claire magazines.
