Disappearing
Before the Covid-19 pandemic took hold of the economy and Irish society at large, there were plans to develop or add a staggering 99 new hotels (and aparthotels) to the accommodation stock in Dublin in 2020 alone*. While gentrification may be a normal part of the evolution of any city, the speed at which it continues to proceed in Dublin is breathtaking: in 2020 it is almost impossible for regular working people, artists, musicians and students to live in the city. These photos document the remnants of a rapidly disappearing Dublin as it struggles under the weight of relentless gentrification, mass tourism, a spiralling homelessness emergency (with over 10,000 people officially homeless in Ireland), and an unprecedented housing crisis.
