ON THE EDGE
'On the Edge' is a visual journey through the main migratory routes that connect Africa and the Middle East with Europe through the Mediterranean Sea: the Western Route (Morocco-Spain), the Central Route (Libya-Italy) and the Eastern Route ( Turkey–Greece). This long-term project has been developed over the last ten years, from 2013 to 2022, capturing the very moment in which people who migrate for different reasons cross a border, prepare to do so or die in the attempt.Crossing the Mediterranean is one of the most dangerous stages of the journey to reach Europe. According to the International Organization for Migration, at least 21,257 people have died on these three routes between 2014 and 2020 and that figure only reflects the bodies that have been recorded. The growing political debate within the European Union is focused on the protection of external borders, rather than on the development of effective strategies to protect the rights of those trying to reach the continent.
