Mediterranean sea | 2020 and 2021
In August 2020, the easing of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic enabled the Spanish NGO Open Arms to launch two consecutive missions aboard the Astral sailboat, the organisation's flagship. The goal was to monitor the situation in the Central Mediterranean and, if necessary, provide assistance to other rescue ships operating in the area.
The Astral travelled 3,500 miles, assisted in two rescue operations carried out by the Louise Michel and the Open Arms ships, and documented the situation on the sea route connecting Libya and Tunisia with the coasts of Malta and Italy.
In July 2021, the organization launched a new mission. The Astral travelled 1,400 miles, carried out 16 interventions assisting the Italian authorities in their rescue operations, mostly off the coast of Lampedusa and one to the south of Sardinia.
These pictures where shot during those three missions and are a brief of sample of what happened during those six weeks at sea, in two different years.
