Bexée
Recuerdo las historias que mis abuelos contaban. Hablaban de todo lo que sucedía por las noches, sobre las apariciones del Diablo en una cueva ubicada en el campo, sobre la Matlacihuatl que conduce a los hombres borrachos por caminos difíciles hasta perderlos, de la Carreta de la Muerte y su dedicación a cosechar almas, del Chaneque, cuya encomienda es la de cuidar el campo.
Actualmente la cercanía del pueblo con la Ciudad de Oaxaca, ha ido generando un ritmo de vida muy diferente al de mis padres y abuelos, dando pie a que estas leyendas y tradiciones se disuelvan en la memoria. Esto me motivó a realizar una búsqueda, recorriendo parajes, arroyos, presas, ríos, calles, cañadas y veredas, para encontrar a los bexée y registrar fotográficamente la experiencia.
Bexée is a Zapotec-language word from the Oaxaca Valley that refers to presences, ghosts or apparitions. The idea of capturing these beings arises from personal experiences. My home is located on one of the oldest roads in my community and I have sometimes heard, felt and perceived overnight presences that leave me with a sense of fear and anxiety, That is why I have been interested in knowing how their forms are according to what those who live there count. I remember the stories my grandparents told. They talked about everything that happened at night, about the apparitions of the Devil in a cave located in the field, about the Matlacihuatl that leads the drunken men through difficult roads to lose them, about the Cart of Death and his dedication to harvest souls, of the Chaneque, whose task is to guard the countryside. Currently the proximity of the town with the City of Oaxaca, has been generating a rhythm of life very different from that of my parents and grandparents, giving rise to these legends and traditions dissolve in memory. This motivated me to make a search, touring places, streams, dams, rivers, streets, glens and sidewalks, to find the bexée and record photographically the experience.
