A recently finished new mural by LAPIZ in the Speicherstrasse at Werksviertel in Munich. ONE LOVE was first painted at a festival in Lemwerder in 2018. Over 3 m tall, a bright coloured Vladimir Putin was kissing himself. During that time the FIFA world Cup took place in Russia and the intention was to highlight Putin’s narcissism and homophobia. Four years later, in 2022, this motive of course is very up to date.

“When I pitched the idea to Loomit, (Curator at Werksviertel) he immediately understood that it needed to be seen. And just like that he gave away part of his most prized wall in Munich’s Werksviertel, a piece he painted back in 1999. Over the next couple of days I recreated ONE LOVE, so here is again the homophobic narcissist loving no one else but himself” LAPIZ tells.

LAPIZ is currently living in Germany but taught himself to paint on the streets of Dunedin (New Zealand). LAPIZ tells that in his early years he went to South Africa to work on HIV projects. It was a very interesting and intense time for him only 10 years after the end of apartheid.

Then he lived in New Zealand for a few years to do his doctorate and was confronted with completely different living conditions. The newspapers talked about farming and cats in need of rescue, nothing of the challenges he was used to in Africa.

"I mean, I had just come back from a burning country and now I was in a land of nature and ease. That was the shocking social contrast, it was a cultural shock, and because of that lack of news/challenges and life, I started to vent through street art and public interventions" LAPIZ is telling.

The photograph of LAPIZ artwork by Michael Nguyen is part of the photo  series: Werksviertel Munich - An exciting urban development project with ephemeral street art

One of the most spectacular buildings in Munich has been built on top of an old potato silo. The old, existing potato silo of Pfanni-Werke has been integrated into the new building, and has been raised to 86 meters. The upper floors are home to the Adina Apartment Hotel and below is a budget wombat's hostel.
