Markus Martinez Burman is an environmental scientist, educator, and documentary photographer based between Mexico and Sweden. As a 2020 and 2021 National Geographic Grantee, Martinez’s projects have focused on storytelling to support the reconnection of youth with their territory and nature using participatory methodologies such as photography. Martinez is part of INDISProject.org and led research and workshops in the Monkoxi indigenous nation of Lomerio in Bolivia, mentoring youth in the co-production of socio-environmental and their own stories. From this experience, Martinez was able to co-produce FotoVoz: Monkoxi Reconnection, an in-print photobook compiling the stories and testimonies of the youth and the community on protecting their territory and autonomy. As a photographer, Martinez is interested in the documentation of environmental and social justice issues. Martinez strives to continue developing visual methodologies to support communities in reconnecting with their ancestral knowledges, territory, and nature.
