Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.
T.S.Eliot -The Waste Land, 1922.

As I was walking through desert lands, I came upon a sacred figure made of stone, broken and cracked. Gossip say that it was a tomb raider; others think that it was the barrenness and others still assure that it was Time. There are places which are cracked naturally and because of their strangeness, it’s something magical. The first encounter with this remote peninsula was through that figure. A paradox. A mirage of this empty village.

Paraguaná is situated to the North West of Venezuela, also known as “conuco entre el mar”. Its ethnic and indigenous pluralism defines the identity of the people who inhabit this hostile land. The locals sit outside their homes to watch, to contemplate. While the sunlight declines, a surreal spectacle begins. The necromancers invoke the dancing spirits who refer to our ancestors, the salt flats lead us a vast and dreadful space, and the salt man holds in his burnt skin crevices of his memory. And the local watches. In the meantime, I walk lost between roots and mesquite trees, observing how the vision I had dissipates in the evening horizon.

 Y de tu sombra, elevándose al ocaso para encontrarte;
