Before and after 1959 Cuban revolution, religion in the island took a shift. The Cuban people and culture never actually separated from the guidance of the catholic saints, mixed with spiritism and African rooted religions in the rituals. However, the communist rule that overtook the island prohibited catholic congregation, practice and adoration as well as persecuted students and professionals that professed the religion. This deeply rooted into the peoples conscience that normalized shutting down that aspect of their life and relegate the practice to the privacy of their homes.
