About
Louisa Marie Summer, born 1983 in Munich, is an artist and documentary photographer currently based in Brooklyn, NY. She holds a University Diploma in Photo Design from the University of Applied Sciences Munich and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. In 2010 she relocated to New York to work as a freelance photographer and photography teacher for students with special needs.

Louisa is an artist concerned with inequality between social classes. Through subtle and intimate images she examines issues of social structure, inequity, identity, and survival. She has explored these issues in India, the Republic of Georgia, the United States, and most recently in Ukraine and Romania. Eager to address human needs and to give voice to those living on the margins of society and those not heard in their communities, her work is comprehensive yet conscientious.

During the last years, Louisa’s work has been internationally recognized and accomplished several awards such as: Mary Clerc Scholarship, New Vision Award, Lens Culture International Exposure Award, and T.C. Colley Scholarship Award. She was a selected student of the Eddie Adams Workshop XXIII, Missouri Photo Workshop and the PhotoEspaña Festival. Moreover, she was nominee for Prix Pictet and Joop Swart Masterclass, and featured as Emerging Talent by Reportage by Getty Images in 2011.
Her photographs have been published nationally and internationally in Eyemazing Photography Magazine, GUP Magazine, Dummy, Brennpunkt, Sí¼ddeutsche Zeitung, Providence Monthly, PDN Emerging, and the American Photography 25 Book. In 2012 Schilt Publishing published her book Jennifer’s Family. Louisa’s images have been exhibited and collected internationally, most recently, in Russia, Luxembourg and the United States. Her work became part of the famous Melva Bucksbaum and Raymond Learsy Collection in Sharon, CT and the Photography Archive of the Centre National de l’Audiovisuel in Luxembourg, L.
