Ryan went AWOL from the US Army and got a degree in Peace Studies. He has held solo exhibitions at the Nikon Salons in Tokyo & Osaka, The Fuji Film Salon, The foreign correspondents Club of Thailand, The Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan and more.

Ryan has received awards and grants from the Nikon Salon, W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, The Pulitzer Center, Internews & more. He is a judge for the International Photo Awards, Photo Lucida’s Critical Mass & a nominator for Prix Pictet.

In addition to his own work and exhibitions. Ryan founded and directs Documentary Arts Asia, a foundation for supporting emerging & established documentary artists in Asia.   He also directs, Sakse Agency, Everyday Kachin, the Free Kachin Campaign, the Naw Ming Media Award & has directed 8 editions of photo/film festivals through the Chiang Mai Documentary Arts Festival.

Ryan has called Asia home for nearly 2 decades and he works primarily on self-assigned projects.
