Since I started to photograph my mother, I got more involved with the issue of mental health. Take Her Seriously is a project that started in 2018 based on a memory of a something heard multiple times in my childhood: “Don’t take everything your mother says seriously, Isabella”. My mother’s opinion had always been allowed to be questioned due to her mental condition.
After that, I started thinking about other possible investigations inside this theme, that would bring about the sensations experienced by people who have been hospitalized due mental health issues.
I searched for individuals that have been submitted to psychiatric clinics. Shortly I build a relationship with them, to make then more comfortable to talk about their experience. Each person chooses the place where they want to be photographed and after that, all the people choose their photo for the project. I then ask them to express themselves about their feelings on the experience of living with mental illnesses, be it with words, drawings and other media.
