The latest eruption of Sakurajima remains me an old assignment that I did in 2016. On July 26, 2016 an explosive eruption spewing volcanic ashes 5,000 meters into the sky and reaching out almost 10 km to Kagoshima city with a population of 606,000. Kagoshima residents lead their daily lives as this volcanic mountain exploded 47 times that year, and had been on an alert level of "3" since February in 2016 which closed off the entire mountain.
Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. The large eruption in 1914 emitted enough lava to close the strait between the Sakurajima volcanic island in Kagoshima Bay and the Osumi Peninsula on Kyushu, the country’s southwestern main island.
