About
Francene Keery was born in New York City, being nurtured within the international culture of museums, theaters, libraries, and friendships with avant-garde artists and filmmakers, throughout the 70’s and 80’s.
Reading US Camera 1947 in her teens, she realized the emotional power photography had to describe people and their way of life.  Wanting to learn from the masters, lead to study MOMA’s photography archives over a period of two years, and finally receiving a M.F.A. in Fine Arts/Photography from Antioch College in 1982.
During the 80’s through the 90's Francene worked as a journalistic photographer for the Village Voice, New York Times, and New York Post, as well as magazines including The New York Times Sunday Magazine, Artforum, Life, Film Culture, and others. Photography grants include the Polaroid Corporation, New York State Council of the Arts, Brooklyn Arts Council, Ruth Chevron Foundation, and a Fulbright Scholar Award in Photography to Mexico. Her photographs are in the collections of The Polaroid Corporation, Pfizer Corporation, Chase Bank, International Center of Photography, MOMA, UNICEF, Anthology Film Archives, Citibank and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo y Barro in Paraguay.  They have been exhibited in galleries, museums, and published in books within the USA, Europe and Latin America. In 2016 she was awarded first prize for an essay on the women incarcerated in Asuncion.
An interest in documenting diverse cultures has lead to travels through the USA, Latin America, Caribbean, and China. She has lived in Paraguay since 2002.
