Demonstrators climb over a fence to escape tear gas and rubber bullets that Philadelphia police fired on the crowd on Interstate 676 during a protest for George Floyd in Philadelphia, Pa. on June 1, 2020.
This photo captures the fear and chaos that broke out after Philadelphia police fired tear gas and rubber bullets into a crowd of protesters that had flooded Interstate 676 during a protest for George Floyd. The white light and rays of sun shining through are deceptive, as it was a sight made possible only because of the tear gas smoke. The four protesters predominantly pictured are seen in various states: one’s leg is skewed as he climbs over the fence, the next is a member of the media, the next is shouting with her mask down, and the last still has her mask on. In such a chaotic and scary situation, I’m proud that I was able to still document the situation.
