This is a series of portraits I made over a weekend during a gathering of Merry Pranksters at a secret place in the Midwest, including two of the originals from the 1960s.

About three years ago Ken Kesey's son took the Furthur Bus on a 50th Anniversary tour of the United States, and many younger people rode the bus, and thus, gatherings began after that of what could be called the New Pranksters, and the original pranksters.

I have photographed counterculture since my early 20s as a personal project. My photography adventures have included Grateful Dead shows, Rainbow Gatherings, photographing Ken Kesey and other events.

I began photographing this group shortly before the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead shows in 2015, when I med many of these people.

The portraits here are just a small slice of an overall project that really began in the 1990s. The inspiration for these images was based on a 1965 photo of Jerry Garcia using a black background.
