At 17, a Midwest girl witnessed a moment unfolding between her father and grandfather, sensed its significance and instinctually reached for a camera. During the next 20+ years she honed that perspective, teaching herself her craft through nation and worldwide travels, amidst the rigors of military life, on the floor with two children under two, during countless client sessions, and within the daily rhythms of life, business and art in the small Texas town she claims as home [for now…]. Over time, both an intuitive process and a social documentary aesthetic emerged in her photographic work, spilling over into a self-guided abstract exploration of media that extends beyond photography. Her brand and artist persona, J.Genevieve, is the embodiment of her ability to dive to the depths as naturally as she soars and assumes the shape of the wind. As a creator, she uses the resulting raw, intimate understanding of shadow and light as a means of helping to shift the visual conversation through alternative perspectives. Her belief is that visual art is one of the most powerful and necessary forces in flipping the cultural norms that have [too] long controlled the narratives, particularly of of gender, race and sexuality for the purpose of domination, exploitation and profit. Her forever muses are the wildly profound antics of her children, the process and the real of it; life unfolding in the moment, unideal lighting situations, unfiltered emotion, wild forms and honest souls.
