You've found me! My name is Steven Herr and I currently live in Burlington, Vermont. I am a creative person with an eye for detail and a passion for what I do. I put everything I have into any project I work on. Currently, I am willing to relocate to a more populated area than Burlington. My resume can be found here.

STARTING OUT

I was given my first computer, an Apple IIc, when I was the ripe old age of 5. Only two years later, I used my first version of Photoshop, on a Macintosh LC, to create a drawing that can only be described as terrible. I’m going to blame this on the fact Photoshop didn’t have layers yet. From this point, I went on to code my first website during a middle school club in 1997 using Notepad and Netscape Navigator. Yes, there was in fact a GIF of a mailbox opening that linked to my email address. From then on, I’ve been learning new ways to create artwork on computers and the web.

Over the last 20 years working with computers I’ve accumulated a wealth of experience and practice with a wide range of languages and software. I specialize in front end development using HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript. I am also very proficient in creating a CMS using PHP and MySQL or WordPress. Read More about my knowledge here.

WORKING

I began my career in web design and development in 2004. Over the last 11+ years, I have had the privilege of teaching high school students to create interactive modern designs using web based standards. I have found that instructing students to code has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had and constantly pushes me to stay current with design trends. Also, I feel a person does not fully understand how to debug anything until they have tried to help a high school student fix their 500 line javascript image gallery. Over my lifetime I’ve seen web development change every month and I have had many successes with my students. My students have won several national awards for their design / programming skills and we have gone into space together.

During my career I have also spent time as our school district's Web Manager which included overseeing the modernization of their site and the management of 10+ people in multiple locations. During the summers when I'm not playing with my dog or exploring Vermont on my bike, I can be found freelance web developing or photographing weddings on the weekend.

The one constant I have had over the course of my life is that I love learning new skills and technology. So, if you are seeking a creative designer who is capable of coding just about anything, I'm your guy!
