On September 2019, a strong cat 5 hurricane was almost “parked” for about 18 hours on the Bahamas islands. The eye of Hurricane Dorian hit the Abaco Islands with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph.

I received a call a week after Hurricane Dorian hit Bahamas, an NGO asked me to assist them to document the disaster and relief. I arrived to Nassau, the capital, and it was in a good shape, but as soon as I got into the cities affected, my perspective of the disaster was suddenly changed.

A week later most of the residents were evacuated from the affected areas. Abandoned cars and houses was a common sight. No electricity, running water, basic services, open business, gasoline, etc. The few residents remaining depended on the government and NGO aids.

The Mud used to be a neighborhood with mostly Haitian illegal immigrants. The force of the Dorian swept the entire neighborhood. Kervan and his wife were survivors. He told me what he had to do back in those days. He had to carry with his wife on his back and swing for about 2 hours in order to save their lives. A horrific experience.
